DELMAR — Edna M. Gisel, age 82, of Delmar, Iowa, died on Thursday evening, May 14, 2009, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa. A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 18, 2009, from the Carson and Son Funeral And Cremation Services in Maquoketa, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 17, 2009, from the Carson and Son Funeral And Cremation Services in Maquoketa, Iowa. Burial will be at the Evergreen Cemetery, Delmar, Iowa. Edna M. Asmussen was born on December 7, 1926, in Jackson County, Iowa, to Christopher Asmussen and Alice (Carstens) Asmussen. She was a 1943 graduate of Maquoketa Community High School, and then received her nurse's training at Jane Lamb Hospital in Clinton, Iowa. She married Harold L. Gisel on March 3, 1951 in Spragueville, Iowa. He preceded her in death on December 18, 2002. Edna was a registered nurse, first working at Jane Lamb Hospital in Clinton, then for a short time as a company nurse for Clinton Engines, and for almost 40 years in the surgery and obstetrics department at the Jackson County Public Hospital in Maquoketa, retiring in 1992. Edna was a member of the Delmar United Methodist Church, and was a former Delmar City Council member. She enjoyed her family, gardening when she was able, puzzles and attending her grandsons' events. She loved her home, having a family meal and was a good cook. Chicken and dressing and green bean casserole were two of the family's favorites. She was hard working and that work ethic carried through in everything she did. She was always thinking of and willing to help others. Edna is survived by a son, Steven (Carol) Gisel of Maquoketa, IA; a brother, Dale (Peggy) Asmussen of Preston, IA; and two grandsons, Colin Gisel and Bryn Gisel. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Thomas Gisel; and a sister, Doris. An Edna M. Gisel Memorial Fund has been established. Death date: May 14, 2009
