DEWITT — Maxine L. Harder, age 94, of rural DeWitt, died Thursday April 30, 2009. Per Maxine's request, there will be no viewing or service. Private family inurnment will be in Salem Cemetery, Spragueville, at a later date. Maxine was born on July 26, 1914, near Spragueville to John F. and Edith (Florence) Beck. She graduated from Fairfield School and later received her high school diploma. On December 28, 1940, Maxine married Alfred W. Harder. Alfred and Maxine moved to their beloved farm west of DeWitt in 1945 where she resided until 2007 when she moved to Grand Haven Retirement Home. Maxine was a longtime member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Grand Mound. She was a Ladies Aid member and belonged to several Bible study groups, including one group of treasured friends who met monthly for over 50 years. After retirement, Maxine took numerous correspondence courses in history and literature through the University of Iowa. Maxine loved being a homemaker for her family and an active member of her community. She participated in numerous community organizations such as the Boy and Girl Scouts, Friends of the Wapsi, Nature Society and DeWitt Historical Society. She enjoyed reading, spoiling her many pets and feeding and watching the birds and squirrels in her yard. But most of all, she cherished going on walks with her husband and being with her family and friends. Maxine is survived by a son, Gerald "Jerry" (Elizabeth) Harder and a daughter, Mary (Martin) Wilson; three sisters, Dorothy Beck, Violet Osborn and Edith Viviani. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers (Earl, Johnny and Dillon) and two sisters (Irene and Ethel).
