DEWITT — Bernadine L. (Mrs. Melvin) Larsen, 92, DeWitt, died Easter Sunday, April 12, 2009, at Genesis Medical Center, DeWitt. Bernadine Louise McMahon Larsen was born November 24, 1916, south of DeWitt to the late Malachi and Margaret (Mielke) McMahon. She graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1935 and went to nurses training at Mercy Hospital in Clinton, becoming a registered nurse in 1938. Bernadine married Melvin Larsen on January 25, 1941, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt. She worked as a nurse at Mercy Hospital and the Alverno in Clinton, DeWitt Hospital and Westwing Place in DeWitt. She was a devout member of St. Joseph Church, DeWitt, where she taught catechism and was also a member of the Altar and Rosary Society. Bernadine volunteered for the Red Cross Blood Bank, taught home health nursing during World War II and worked with the girl scouts and cub scouts. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Bernadine enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and friends. She loved to sew, crochet and embroider. Surviving are her children and their spouses, Harold and Erlinda Larsen, Oceanside, California, Melvin, Jr. and Elizabeth Larsen, Birmingham, Michigan, Margaret and Tom Grace, Wheaton, Illinois, Deacon Bob and Lorri Larsen, Algona, Iowa, and Jeannie and Tom Dean, DeWitt; 19 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Preceding Bernadine in death in addition to her husband and parents were a granddaughter, five brothers and four sisters. The family will receive friends at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 3:00 until 7:00 p.m. Friday, April 17, 2009, with a rosary at 7:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 18, 2009, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt, with the Rev. Fr. David Brownfield presiding and Bernadine's son, Deacon Bob Larsen, assisting. Burial will be in the Church Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph Church and School. Grandsons, Kevin, Terry, Blake, Brian, Shawn, Scott Larsen, Ed and Tom Grace and Matt Dean will serve as pallbearers.
