SABULA — Gary M. Edlen, age 70, of Sabula, Iowa, died Friday, December 19, 2008, at Genesis West Hospital in Davenport following a short illness. According to his wishes cremation rites have been accorded. A graveside service was held at 1:30 p.m. today at the Miles Cemetery in Miles, Iowa. The Pape Funeral Home, Clinton, is assisting the family. Gary was born in Preston, Iowa, on January 13, 1938, the son of Walter “Frog” and Mildred Bethel Edlen. Gary graduated from Clinton High School and attended Clinton Community College. He married Carol Hall. He later married Ione Rathje on November 29, 1985, in Sabula. Gary had been employed with E.I. DuPont, Camanche Machine and Tool, Chemplex and in industrial and insurance sales. He was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church, Sabula. Gary was known world wide as a Master Model Railroad builder. He lectured throughout the United States and in Australia. He has had many articles published in model railroad magazines and had been filmed for public television, “Tracks Ahead.” Gary was a member of the Central Iowa Garden Railroad Society. Gary is survived by his wife, Ione; five children, Jim (Dawn) Edlen, Laura (Randy) Smith, Gary (Kathy) Rahtje, Gayle (Bill) Fraker and Danny (Deanna) Rathje; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Bonnie (Rick) Artigas. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and a great-grandson. Online condolences may be left at www.papefh.com. Death date: Dec. 19, 2008
