MILES — John R. “Russ” Dever, age 94, of Miles, Iowa, died Sunday, December 7, 2008, at the Jackson County Regional Health Center in Maquoketa. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, December 12th, at the Pape Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Paul Lippstock officiating. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Irenaeus Calvary Cemetery, Clinton. John was born in Sabula, Iowa, on November 2, 1914, the son of John P. and Beulah Kempter Dever. He attended St. Irenaeus grade school and graduated from Lyons High School in 1932. John married Elna Wilcke in 1932. He later married Alice Hannafan Kohl on December 27, 1962, in Clinton. John served with the Army Air Corps in Germany during W.W. II. He had been a commercial fisherman before going to work for the Kohl Lumber Company in Lyons of which he became a part owner. After selling the lumber company he became a contractor. He was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Sabula and the Miles American Legion Post 667. John enjoyed fishing and playing cards and had been a blood donor with the American Red Cross until the age of 90. John is survived by his wife, Alice; five children, Sandra Kohl of Tacoma, WA, Lana (Ken) Dever-Andre of Florida, Carol Bruland of Michigan, David (Donna) Dever of Miles and Michael (Pat) Dever of Delmar, IA; 23 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Phyllis of Florida; and special friends, Duane and Cheryl Palmer of Odon, IN, and Margaret Wagemester of Clinton. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Susan on June 17, 2008; three sons, James, Loren and Tom; and a sister, Jeanette Hillis.
