Laurence P. “Larry” Witt, Sr. age 86, of Clinton died Friday morning, Nov. 28, 2008 at his home. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 1 at the Pape Funeral Home. The Rev. John Stack will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Irenaeus Calvary Cemetery with military rites by the AMVETS. Casket bearers will be nephews, Chuck, Bill, Jim, Bob and Dave Witt and Chuck Sirvid. Honorary casket bearers are Tim Mullen, Jerry Ramig, Roger Gammon, Ted Rettowski and Gene Steensen. Larry was born on July 3, 1922, in Clinton, the son of Peter and Hazel Turner Witt. He graduated from Clinton High School in 1940. Larry served with the U.S. Navy as a Fire Control 2nd Class during W.W. II. He served in the Mediterranean, Atlantic and Pacific theaters from 1942 to 1946. After the war Larry married Bernice Kolar-Klaes on Sept. 7, 1946, in Clinton. Larry was a mail carrier for the Lyons/Clinton Post Office for over 30 years. Larry loved bowling, competing in annual city tournaments, area tournaments, state tournaments and brothers tournaments. Larry and his four brothers formed an all-brothers team in 1947 and competed as a unit in league play for 29 years. He served as CBA President in 1963 and President of the Iowa State Bowling Association from 1971 to 1972. Larry was a member of the Clinton Bowling Association Hall of Fame and was inducted to the Iowa State Bowling Association in 1994 for his continuous and untiring efforts, dedication, service and knowledge in and for the game of bowling. Larry was a member of the National Letter Carriers Association for more than 60 years. He was a member of the AMVETS and American Legion Post 190. Larry is survived by his wife Bernice; a son Laurence (Jude) Witt, Jr. of Clinton; daughters, Angela Doran of Clinton and Patricia (Mike) Gammon of Albany, Ill.; three grandchildren, Bree Zimmermann, Brandon (Erika) Bender and Joe Gammon; and two great grandchildren, Logan and Allison Zimmermann. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and a sister. Memorials may be made to Mercy Hospice or Clinton Junior Bowling Association. Online condolence may be left at www.papefh.com.
