FRESNO, Calif. — Dr. Robert Edward (Bob) Valett, 80, of Fresco, CA, formerly of Clinton, died Friday, Nov. 14 at his home. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 2 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Fresno, Clovis, CA. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be sent to the Unitarian Universalist Church of Fresno or to the San Joaquin River Parkway Trust, 1550 E Shaw Ave., Fresno, CA 93710. Wildrose Chapel Funeral Home, 916 E Divisadero, Fresno, is assisting with arrangements.Robert E. Valett was born in Clinton, Iowa, on Nov. 22, 1927, the son of Edward John and Myrtle (Petersen) Valett. He became an Eagle Scout, played in bands and was active in the Clinton YMCA where he was a director at YM Camp Blackhawk in 1945. He was a 1945 graduate of Clinton High School. He enlisted in the Navy medical corps near the end of World War II. Afterwards he attended the University of Iowa and George Williams College.He married Shirley Bellman July 8, 1950, in College Park, Maryland. Dr. Valett received graduate degrees from the University of Chicago (MA) and the University of California in Los Angeles (EdD) with doctoral concentration in counseling and educational psychology. He taught in the Sacramento County schools, taught psychology at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, CA, and at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. As the author of over 20 books on learning disabilities and numerous humanistic motivational posters for schools. He was a professor emeritus of special education at California State University, Fresno where he taught from 1970 to 1992.Dr. Valett was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Eric Douglas Valett. He is survived by his wife, Shirley, and four children, Steven Robert and Pamela Sue Valett of Fresno, John Earl of Concord, CA, and Lawrence Kent of Mt. Airy, MD; six grandchildren and a cousin, Roger (Jeanette) Petersen of Clinton.Death date: Nov. 14, 2008
