LONG GROVE — Mrs. Gladys C. Sheridan, 90, Long Grove, died Thursday afternoon, November 13, 2008 at Westwing Place, DeWitt. Mrs. Sheridan was born Gladys Catherine Thiel, October 5, 1918, south of Calamus, Iowa, to Clara Rose (Green) and Michael J. Thiel. She attended schools at Calamus and St. Joseph’s, DeWitt. Gladys was united in marriage to Vincent “Babe” Sheridan, June 27, 1939, at St. Joseph’s Church, DeWitt. Gladys and her late husband farmed from 1939 until 1968 in Gambril at Martin’s Station. There they raised their seven children. Gladys continued to reside on the farm until 2001. She was a 69-year member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Long Grove, and was a charter member of St. Ann’s Guild. Gladys also was a member of Butler Township Women’s Farm Bureau. Gladys valued her time with family, her children, grandchildren and friends. Her life was filled with family gatherings, thoughtful parenting and generous work. She had a deep devotion to her Catholic Faith, the Blessed Mother, praying the rosary and doing for others. She was an amazing cook. Surviving are her children, Jacqueline “Jackie” (Darrell) Spain, Lost Nation, Ron (Bonnie) Sheridan, Zumbrota, Minnesota, Barbara (John) Hanrahan, DeWitt, Dennis Sheridan, Glendale Heights, Illinois, Dave (Sandy) Sheridan, Long Grove, Mary Reed, Bettendorf; grandchildren, Vincent (Stephanie) Spain, Mark (Melinda) Hanrahan, Scott Sheridan, Molly Sheridan, Shane (Mary) Reed, Chad (Marcy) Sheridan, Thomas (Marianna) Sheridan, Erik (Jamie) Leidenfrost, Evan Sheridan, Amy Hanrahan, Elisha Reed, Sara Sheridan and Valerie Reed; fifteen great-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ethel McDonald, Pleasanton, California, and Lois London, Colome, South Dakota. Preceding Gladys in death were her husband, Babe on November 5, 1983, her parents, a daughter, Yvonne Leidenfrost, and a sister, Catherine Thiel. The family will receive relatives and friends at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 2 until 6 p.m. Sunday, November 16, 2008. A Funeral Liturgy will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, November 17, 2008 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Long Grove. The Rev. Fr. H. Robert Harness presiding. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Ann’s Church Building Fund, St. Ann’s Guild or St. Joseph’s School, DeWitt. Pallbearers will be grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be John Sheridan, Robert Thiel, Merrill Boyle, Richard Boyle and James Schwarz.
