Nelson, Harold “Swede” "Whitey" View/Sign Guest Book

DEWITT — Harold “Swede” “Whitey” Nelson, 79, DeWitt, died on Friday, Nov. 28, 2008, at Mahaska County Hospital in Oskaloosa, Iowa. The son of Marion and Bertha (Greve) Nelson, Harold was born Sept. 12, 1929, in Grand Mound, Iowa. On October 15, 1971, he was united in marriage to Emogene Mumm at Faith Lutheran Church in Eldridge, Iowa. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during the Korean Conflict from 1951 to 1952. Swede retired from Dupont in 1985 after 37 years of service. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Eldridge, and the Grand Mound American Legion Post 622, where he is serving as Post Adjutant and had been Past Commander. Swede was also a member of the Plus 60 Club, delivered meals to seniors for many years and liked to play cards, garden and do crossword puzzles. Survivors include his wife, Emogene; daughter and son-in-law, Dee and Todd Hoke, Oskaloosa, Iowa; his sister, Donna Searles, Bettendorf, Iowa, and his brother and sister-in-law, Steve and Nancy Nelson, Blue Grass, Iowa; nieces and nephews. Swede was preceded in death by his parents, daughter June Marie, and his sisters, Marlene Evers and Dolores Breeden. Funeral services will be held at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, on Monday, Dec. 1, 2008, at 10 a.m. Pallbearers will be Hub Hughes, Arnold Kunde, Mark Mumm, Adam Mumm, Rodney Claude and Steve Nelson. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery. The Grand Mound American Legion Post 622 will conduct graveside services. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008, at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt. Memorials may be left to the Grand Mound American Legion Post 622 or the DeWitt Fire Department.
