CLINTON — Joseph M. “Joe” Determan age 94 of Clinton died Saturday November 15, 2008, at the Alverno Health Care Facility in Clinton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, November 19th at 10:30 A.M. in Sacred Heart Church, Clinton. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Pape Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Boniface Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Steve and Thom Determan, Pat Phillips, Terry Dingmon, Ed Dilworth and David Determan. Joseph was born on August 30, 1914, in Preston, IA, the son of John and Marie (Mertens) Determan. Joe graduated from Preston High School in 1931 and from the Tri City Barber College in Davenport in 1935. He operated Joe’s Barber Shop in Preston from 1938 until he was drafted into the U.S. Army during W.W. II. He served with the 91st Airborne Division in Italy. Joe married Jean Ross on June 17, 1947, in Maquoketa. Jean died on May 23rd of this year. Joe and Jean moved to Clinton in 1947 and he operated Joe’s Barber Shop on Main Ave. in Lyons until he retired in 1986. He continued to cut hair at the shop on Senior Citizen Wednesdays until the age of 81. He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish, American Legion Post 190 and the Loyal Moose Lodge #363. He and Jean had enjoyed traveling, watching stock car racing and dancing. Joseph is survived by eleven nieces and nephews: Karen (Jerry) Dix of Bellevue, NB, Kathy Peters of Clinton, Charlotte (Pat) Phillips of Camanche, Thom (Kate) Determan of Dubuque, Janet Klitz of Clinton, David (Freda) Determan of Ft. Scott, KS, Rick (Joann) Determan of Davenport, Nancy Kohrt of Amana, IA, John (Kathleen) Determan of Bettendorf, Steve (Joann) Determan of Marion, IA and Jane (Ed) Dilworth of Davenport; several great-nieces and nephews; several great-great-nieces and nephews; and three sisters-in-law, Rieneilda Daterman of Clinton, Helen Determan of Bettendorf and Barbara Ross of Cedar Rapids. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and three brothers, Gregory, Robert and Donald.Death date: Nov. 15, 2008
