A. L. Bartholomew, Preston Attorney and Banker, Dies Very Suddenly In Calif. Funeral Yesterday.

A. L. Bartholomew, one of Jackson county’s pioneer resident and a prominent banker and lawyer of Preston, Iowa, passed away very suddenly last Friday at Los Angeles, Calif., where he had gone with a cousin, Mrs. Ella Breed of New York, for a winter’s sojourn. Mr. Bartholomew had been in California just four weeks and while he had not been in the best of health he had been fairly comfortable. His death came as a great shock to his relatives.

A. L. Bartholomew was born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1841. He was four years old when he removed to Cleveland, Ohio, where he grew to manhood and received his education.

Mr. Bartholomew came to Iowa in 1863, and located at Lyons, and where he engaged in the marble business. He came to Jackson county in 1864 and located in Van Buren Twp. He moved to Preston in 1871 and built the first residence in Preston and in the fall of 1871, he opened a bank and at the time of his death was president of the First National Bank of Preston. He also was a prominent attorney of Jackson county. He was an eminently good man in all the relations of life and was an honest and respected citizen, one that Jackson county could ill afford to lose.

Mr. Bartholomew was united in marriage to Miss Mary Beckwith of Belvidere, who passed away four years ago.
