O'Malley OSF, Mary Helen

CLINTON — Sister Mary Helen O’Malley, OSF, age 91, of Clinton, died Wednesday, October 29, 2008, at the Alverno Health Care Facility in Clinton. A Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, November 1st at The Canticle, 841 13th Ave. North, Clinton. The Rev. Thomas Hennen will preside. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday at The Canticle with a rosary at 4:00 P.M. and a scripture service at 6:30 P.M. Burial will be in St. Irenaeus Calvary Cemetery. Casket bearers will relatives, friends, and members of the Sisters of St. Francis. The Pape Funeral Home is assisting. Sister Helen was born the daughter of John James and Catherine (Curley) O’Malley on March 26, 1917, in Chicago. She received her elementary education at Cornell Public and St. Francis de Paula in Chicago. She graduated from Visitation High School, also in Chicago. Sister Helen received her Associate of Arts Degree in Education from Mount St. Clare College in Clinton and her Bachelor of Science Degree in Dietetics from Marymount College, Salina, KS. Sister held an Iowa State Dietetic License and Registration with The American Dietetic Association. She joined the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Francis, Clinton on September 8, 1936, and professed her final vows on June 10, 1942.Sister Helen spent most of her 45 years of active ministry in food service. Prior to beginning her dietetic studies, she had taught for three years at St. Patrick School, Clinton. She was head dietician at Mercy Hospital, Burlington, IA, from 1948-1950, and at St. Francis Hospital, Macomb, IL, for six years. Returning to Clinton, Sister Helen provided for the dietary needs of the students of Mount St. Clare Academy and College, as well as the Sisters of St. Francis, for 21 years. Most recently from 1977 to 1989, she served as dietician at The Alverno Health Care Facility in Clinton. She retired in 1990 at Mount St. Clare Convent and lived at The Canticle until October, 2008, when she moved to The Alverno. Sister Helen is survived by a sister; Mrs. Noreen Gary, Oak Forest, IL and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers; John, Robert, and Thomas, and one sister, Catherine (Kay). Death date: October 29, 2008
