CEDAR RAPIDS — Max Gradwell, 86, of 4201 Pineview Dr. NE, died Sunday, October 26, 2008, in his home following a long illness. Graveside services with military rites will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 15, 2008, in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 15, 2008. Arrangements by Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Survivors include his wife of 61 years Mary; their children, Michael (Susan) Gradwell, of Mt. Vernon, Mary E. Gradwell of Cedar Rapids, Margaret (Bob) Laas of Las Vegas, Nevada, Marcia (Tim) Moran Cedar Rapids, Martha (Steve) Kruger of Hendersonville, Tennessee, and Milton (Dena) Gradwell of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Jennifer Van Grimberg, Jeremy Mains, Devin (Paulette) Gradwell, Michelle (Rob) Wiebbecke, and Amanda Gradwell; great-grandchildren, Daron James, Ayanna Wiebbecke and Eden Wiebbecke; and several dear nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, two sisters and one nephew. Max was born October 26, 1922, in Exline, Iowa, to Charles and Helen Benefiel Gradwell. He graduated from Exline High School in 1940. Served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1943 – 1946 (WW II) aboard U.S.S. Admiral Simms. Graduated from Upper Iowa University with the GI Bill assistance. Married Mary I. Whisler on August 10, 1947, in Centerville, Iowa, and made their home in Mason City. Max taught school from 1950 – 1982 beginning his career in Albion, and then at Gilman, Parkersburg, Marengo, Center Point, Linn-Mar, Lisbon and retiring from Northeast Community. Max was a lifetime member of the Lisbon American Legion Cyclops Post No 109. He enjoyed visiting with neighbors, sports on TV, cooking and gardening. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lisbon American Legion Cyclops Post No 109, or to the charity of your choice.
