CLINTON — Mark E. Barnes, 79, of Clinton, died Tuesday, February 5, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center, North Campus, Clinton. Memorial Services will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 29, 2008, at the First Presbyterian Church. A Masonic Rose Croix service will be held in conjunction with the memorial service. The Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements. Mark E. Barnes was born July 27,1928, in Schley (Howard County) Iowa to Michael l. and Veronica Novak Barnes. He married Virginia Lee Simmons in Chicago on October 29, 1948. He was a graduate of Assumption High School in Cresco; earned a Master’s degree in disaster control at the Department of Defense Staff College at Battle Creek, MI.; B.S. degree strategic air command, U.S. Air Force, Omaha, NE; U.S Navy V.I.P. award with honorary tailhook designation; mass casualty management degree, Brook Army Medical Center, Ft. Sam Houston, Texas; chemical and biological warfare defense training U.S. Army; industrial and municipal security school, U.S. Army. He was an independent insurance and investment broker for 13 years prior to his appointment as director of emergency management (civil defense) in 1963 retiring in 1989. He was a pilot and member of the Clinton Flying Club, Clinton Jaycee Key Man Award in 1962, president Gateway Kiwanis Club, 1971; president Iowa Civil Defense Directory Association, 1967; past chairman Clinton County American Red Cross chapter, Clinton Riverboat Days commodore, 1968; past chairman of the Clinton County Crime Commission and the Eastern Iowa Crime Commission; bldg. manager Clinton County Municipal Law Enforcement Center, 18 years; chairman of the Clinton County Board of Health, 26 years; past board member Clinton Humane Society; past member Clinton County Republican Central Committee; past treasurer and member of the Lyons Masonic Lodge 93; Clinton Scottish Rite. Kaaba Shrine and past president Clinton Shrine Club; past president Clinton Masonic Boosters Club, the Clinton High 12 Club and a past deacon and elder of the First United Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife, Virginia, of Clinton; one brother, Russell Barnes of Cresco, Iowa; and one sister, Clest Murphy of Bountiful, Utah; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, 7 brothers and 4 sisters. Death date: February 5, 2008
