CLINTON — Richard L. “Dick” Mayer, 67, of Clinton, passed away on October 13, 2008, at his home surrounded by his family. Richard was born on August 2, 1941, in Cobden, IL, the son of Guy and Esther Barrett Mayer. Richard moved to Iowa at the age of 17 and began his working life. He worked at the Chicago and Northwestern Car Shops, then at the Milwaukee Railroad as a welder and as a brakeman. Later he worked at John Deere starting in Dubuque and then transferring to the Davenport Works after it was built in 1974. Richard retired from the Davenport Works in 2000. Richard married Phyllis Shaw on August 20, 1960, in Clinton. She survives. He had two sons, Billy Joe Mayer born in 1961 and passed away in 1961. He later became the father of the love of his life, Richard L. (Rick) Mayer Jr. In his younger years, Richard was interested in fishing and hunting. He enjoyed traveling the country on Honda Gold Wing motorcycles. He also drove a one ton truck and delivered campers to dealers for a total of 8 years. He enjoyed traveling and spending some time at the casinos around the country. Richard is survived by his wife, Phyllis; his son, Rick (his wife, Angela) of Sycamore, IL; four grandchildren, Tiffany, Richard III, Jonathan and Annie; three brothers and two sisters, Robert (Ruby) Mayer of Makanda, IL, James (Nell) Mayer of Marion, IL, Joseph Mayer of Murphysboro, IL, Geraldine Remrey of Clinton and Bea Craft of Grand Tower, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Billy Joe; a brother, Guy; and two sisters in infancy. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 17th at the Pape Funeral Home in Clinton. Chaplain Connie Beck will officiate. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Springdale Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Al DeBo, Ray Berner, Kevin Catlet, Tim Mayer, Tom Kuelper, and Richard Mayer III. Honorary casket bearers will be Jonathan Mayer and Ray Morrow. Memorials may be made to Mercy Hospice or the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Online condolences may be left at www.papefh.com. Death date: Oct. 13, 2008
