DEWITT — Ronald Paul Lass, 77, DeWitt, Iowa, died Tuesday morning, October 14, 2008, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, Iowa. Ron was born November 18, 1930, in the family home at DeWitt, Iowa. His parents were Otto and Ethel (Malmanger) Lass. He was a graduate of DeWitt High School. Ron served his country in the army during the Korean Era as part of the security agency. On August 7, 1951, Ron was united in marriage to Joan Doescher at Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt. He was employed by the United States Postal Service for 34 years, first in DeWitt, and then at Albany, Illinois, where he served as postmaster. He retired in 1985. Ron was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt, and Eugene McManus American Legion Post #238, DeWitt. He was an avid coin collector and car enthusiast. Ron was a hard worker and enjoyed a good joke. Surviving are his loving wife of 57 years, Joan; a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Diane Lass, Dumas, Texas; a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Wayne Martin, Northglenn, Colorado; grandchildren, Karen Elizabeth Whipple, Michael Whipple, Brett James Whipple, Robert Sutton, and Stephanie Lass; three stepgrandchildren, Amber Bellis, Crystal Martin, Jeremy Martin; three stepgreat-grandchildren, Colin and Cade Bellis, Ava Grace Jimenez; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Betty Lass, Ruth and Carvel VanMeter, Marguerite McClimon and Jean Doescher; other special family members include, Lisa Travis-Hilbert, her husband, Robert, daughter, Jacqueline, and grandson, Travis. Preceding Ron in death were his parents and brothers, Arlan and Eugene. Family and friends may visit at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 3:00 until 7:00 p.m. Friday, October 17, 2008. A Service of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 18, 2008, at Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt, with the Rev. Timothy Carr officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, DeWitt. Eugene McManus Post #238 will conduct military rites at graveside. Pallbearers will be Michael Whipple, Brett Whipple, Jim Lass, Richard Lass, Mark Entsminger and Bob Hilbert. Honorary pallbearers will be Joel Hinck, Brad Anderson, Carvel VanMeter and Robert Sutton.
