BETTENDORF — John A. “Jack” Woods, 81, a resident of Bettendorf, Iowa, died on Saturday, September 13, 2008, at Trinity at Terrace Park Hospital in Bettendorf. His funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, September 18, 2008, at Asbury United Methodist Church, 18th and Mississippi Sts. in Bettendorf where he was a faithful member. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Geneseo, Illinois. Visitation will be from 3:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf and one hour prior to services Thursday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Asbury United Methodist Church or to the Salvation Army. He was born November 7, 1926, in DeWitt, Iowa, the son of Alfred and Hilda (Griebel) Woods. Shortly after his 17th birthday, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy on September 27, 1944, and served at Okinawa in the South Pacific. On May 16, 1946, he was honorably discharged. On October 22, 1949, he was united in marriage to Donna Jean Adams in DeWitt. He was later united in marriage to Donna J. Doy in Geneseo on August 12, 1977. Jack was a carpenter working for Walters and Welsh Construction in earlier years and more recently for various union contractors in the Quad-City area. He built his own homes in DeWitt and in Bettendorf, retiring in 1991 and was a 50-year member of the Carpenter’s Union Local #4. He served as Secretary/Treasurer of the Carpenter’s Union Local #4 for many years and was a member of the Geneseo Moose. Jack and Donna loved ballroom dancing and he worked at the Col Ballroom in Davenport, Iowa for 17 years. He also enjoyed playing bridge and doing the daily puzzles in the paper. Those left to honor his memory include his wife of 31 years, Donna; their children, Michael (Catherine Alexander) Woods of Davenport, Pamela (Richard) Verreault of Joliett, Quebec, Canada, Linda (Tom) Rodts of Albany, Illinois, Dan (Tonia) Doy of Alpha, Illinois, Teresa (Dennis) Wheeler of Rock Island, Illinois, David (Lynn) Doy of Lynn Center, Illinois, Beth (Ed) Casel of Moline, Illinois and Brian (Heather) Doy of Alexis, Illinois; his grandchildren, Jessica Alexander, Tim (Jennifer) Alexander, Shawn (Jennifer) Verreault, Paul (Lindsay) Sereda, Melody (James) Wulgaert, Jason (Lori) Wheeler, Brett Doy, Kurt Doy, Krista Doy, Lauren Casel, Danielle Casel, Nicholas Doy, Kyle Doy, Zack Doy, Chelsea Doy, Raquel Valencia, Rebecca Valencia and Thomas J. Rodts; his great-grandchildren, Kristopher, Emma Rose, Benjamin and Emily Verreault, James and Noah Wulgaert, Jason Jr., Will and Lily Wheeler and Faith Doy; his sisters and brothers, Richard Woods, Shirley Paasch and Jeanette (Richard) Mohr of DeWitt, Mildred Thomas of Linton, Indiana, and David (Bobbie) Woods of Bradenton, Florida. His siblings, Delores McManus, Michael Woods, Katherine Ritmer, Patricia Paulson, Mary O’Connell and Larry Woods; and his parents preceded him in death.
