Death of an Iowa Publisher

Edward Graham, Esq., one of the publishers of the De Witt Standard, died very suddenly on the 14th inst. He had been well for some time, and in the habit of taking medicine. On that day, he gave his wife directions where to find the medicine, which he wished to take, and by mistake he took strychnine instead of quinine! This was about 8 o’clock in the morning, and he lived only one hour.

Mr. Graham was forty-two years of age and was a native of Butler County, Pa. He married in Mercer County, and practiced law there seven years. He came to De Witt, Iowa, in 1850, and the next year was elected Prosecuting Attorney. He was chosen County Judge in 1863, and in ’56, School Fund Commissioner. He had recently become joint proprietor with Judge McNeil of the Standard, but had no connection with the editorial department. Only two papers had been published by them when he died. He was a good lawyer, a worthy citizen, and a man much respected. He probably had as many friends in Clinton County as any resident of it. He leaves a wife and two sons, both of whom are at work in the Standard office. We happened to be in De Witt on the day of his melancholy death, and gathered these facts from Judge McNeil.
