Petersville, IA - At Parnell, IA, on Sunday, Nov 3, occurred the death from pneumonia, following Spanish influenza, of Miss Rachel Bevins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R.F. Bevins of Petersville. Miss Bevins was born at Parnell nineteen years ago, and came here with her parents when about five years of age. Graduating from the parochial schools at Mt. St. Clare academy, Clinton, where she finished the teacher's course and since then devoted herself to teaching, in which she was very successful and at which she was engaged at the time of her last illness.
Of a remarkably bright, sunny disposition, anywhere she was known she made friends. An accomplished musician and vocalist, her sweet voice in home and parish entertainments will long be remembered, as will her kindly ways and sweet girlish face that always brought a pleasant greeting. Much sorrow is felt at her early taking away, not alone by the bereaved relatives, but by this whole neighborhood, where she was loved and familiarly known as 'Rachial'. During her illness all that loving hearts and hands could do had been done for her. But she passed peacefully away, fortified by all the rites of the Catholic Church, of which she was a devout member. The remains were brought here Monday evening, to the home of her parents and the funeral, which was private, took place Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock in St. Mary's cemetery. Rev. D.J. Ryan conducting the beautiful burial service at the grave, where she was laid to rest beside her mother, who passed to the other life five years ago. A bright young life ....
"Strew her green grave with flowers. But shed no bitter tears;
For blessed are they that pass away In girlhood's happy years."
The immediate relatives are her father and stepmother, one brother, Clifford, with the U.S. Navy on the transport 'Plattsburg', one sister, Miss Glendola, and one half-sister, Mrs. M.E. Killeney of Parnell, and one half-brother, Richard Bevins of Oklahoma, besides an aged grandmother, Mrs. M.J. Woods of Parnell, at whose home her death occurred, and many aunts, uncles and cousins, to all of whom is extended much sympathy. Among those from a distance attending the funeral were Mrs. M.J. Woods, Charles Woods, Mrs. M.E. Killeney and son Clayton, Mr. and Mrs. L. Swope, J.H. Kelley and Margaret Kelley of Parnell; Mr. and Mrs. Carl Schaffer, Mr. and Mrs. H. Keuhns, Mrs. Frank Merrill and Milton Dwyer of Cedar Rapids; Mr. and Miss Bevins of Omaha; S.C. and Pvt. D.J. Dwyer of Logan, CO.
