SAVANNA, Ill. — John James Mizlo, Jr., age 80, of Savanna, Illinois, died Wednesday, July 23, 2008, at home surrounded by his loving family. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 26, 2008, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Savanna. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 25, 2008, at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna, with a Scripture Wake service at 8:00 p.m. Burial will be in St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery, Savanna. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in John’s memory. Online condolences and memorial tributes may be sent to the family at www.lawjonesfuneralhome.com. John was born on July 28, 1927 in Bettendorf, Iowa, the son of John James, Sr. and Nellie A. (McKoviak) Mizlo. During John’s teen years, he was a Golden Glove Boxer in the Quad City area. He served in the United States Navy during World War II from 1945-1946. John married Hattie M. Jindresek on September 25, 1948, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Bettendorf, Iowa. John began working for the railroad in Davenport, Iowa, and moved his family to Savanna in 1957. He was employed by the Milwaukee Railroad for 42 years as an Engineer, retiring in 1988. John was a member of the National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees. He was a lifetime charter member of the Bettendorf V.F.W. Canfield-Hughes, Post# 9128. John also served on the honor guard for the Savanna V.F.W. Post # 2223, and was a member of the Savanna American Legion Post #148. John was dedicated to veterans and he volunteered his time transporting them to their doctor’s appointments in Iowa City. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Savanna, where he was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. John was a past member of the Savanna Moose Lodge and was very involved in the Savanna Food Pantry. He enjoyed woodworking and collecting railroad memorabilia. Most of all, John was a great man who loved spending time with his family. John will be dearly missed by his wife, Hattie of Savanna; one son, John J. (Linda) Mizlo, III of Cary, Illinois; one daughter, Marlee (Terry) Andrews of Lena, Illinois; four grandchildren Windy (Paul) Lewis-Mizlo, Traci (Mark) Brinson, Jason (Kim) Andrews, and Dana (Sarah) Andrews; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Francis Mizlo of Grand Prairie, Texas; one sister, Eleanor Blythe of Bettendorf, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews. John is preceded in death by his parents.Death date: July 23, 2008
