CLINTON — Roger J. Gerber, age 82, of Clinton, died Thursday, July 17, 2008 at his home. Funeral services will be held Monday 10:30 am at the Pape Funeral Home, with the Rev. Wayne Wiersema of Gateway Faith Fellowship Church in Fulton officiating. Visitation will be held Sunday 2 - 4 pm at the funeral home. Burial will be at Clarence Cemetery in Clarence, IA. Casket bearers will be Michael Dierks, Lenny Gerber, Chad Housenga, Justin Olmstead, James McCright, and Chuck Empen.Roger was born on June 11, 1926, in Tipton, IA, the son of Harry and Selma (Soll) Gerber. He graduated from Tipton High School and received his Teaching Certificate from Coe College. He married Kathryn Sawyer on Aug. 11, 1945, in Clarence, IA; she died June 6, 2008. Roger taught music and coached at Springdale, IA schools and farmed in the Tipton area.He moved to Clinton in 1960, where he farmed and was an insurance agent for 10 years with Gerber Insurance Agency and Real Estate. He and his wife moved to Sun City, AZ in 1970, where they lived for 20 years. They returned to Clinton in 1990 to be closer to their children. He enjoyed farming and woodworking. Roger is survived by his two daughters, Diane (Jim) Dierks of Clinton and Patti (Jan) Housenga of Camanche; a son, Roger D. (Connie) Gerber of Preston; seven grandchildren, Lenny Gerber, Michelle (Chuck) Empen, Chad (Robin) Housenga, Christine Housenga, Cheri (Justin) Olmstead, Carol (Jimmy) McCright, and Michael (Tonya) Dierks, three step grandchildren, Dan (Diana) Heleme, Rick (Chris) Heleme, and Stacy (Stewart) Mohr; 16 great grandchildren and 6 step great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Kathryn, who was his greatest love.Death date: July 17, 2008
