CLINTON — Ilo Stamm Schadewaldt, age 99, died on Tuesday, July 15, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center, Clinton, IA. Born August 22, 1908, in Udall, KS, she was the daughter of George (Milt) and Minnie Stamm. She married Henry G. Schadewaldt September 12, 1931, in the parsonage of St. Peter‚’ Lutheran Church in Morrison. From the Kansas farm house where she was born, Ilo saw one of the last cattle drives. Her family moved back to Wisconsin when she was 5 years old, where she graduated from Green County Normal in 1928. She taught at Sanders School, a one room schoolhouse south of Monroe for five years. After buying a farm 1⁄2 mile east of Dakota, IL, in 1938, Ilo and Henry involved themselves in the farm community and became members of the Dakota United Methodist Church. Ilo taught Sunday school for over 50 years, directed Christmas plays and helped with Bible School. She also was active in the Woman’s Missionary Circle, the Happy Day Home Extension and other community activities. Ilo was known for her generosity. She always baked extra pies and rolls and many times fried up chicken suppers for those that needed a visit plus home cooking. Ilo also enjoyed entering her canned fruits, vegetables, jams and jellies in the Stephenson County Fair. One year she won so many blue ribbons she received a 50 pound bag of sugar as a bonus prize. Ilo had a remarkable memory and shared her stories with her daughter, Cynthia, who is working on her Memoirs. Ilo cared deeply for her friends and relatives and made friends everywhere she went. At one time she hand wrote over 200 Christmas letters and cards, and loved receiving mail until the week she died. Ilo blessed all who knew her with her sunshine personality. Everyone was welcome in her home, beggar or saint, and she made sure everyone was fed. She is survived by 4 children, Joan (John) Boyd of Dakota, IL, Arnold (Shirley) Schadewaldt of Dakota, IL, Judy (Jerome) Lighthart of Wheaton, IL and Cynthia (Dorance) Calhoun of Clinton, IA, with whom she has lived the past 71⁄2 years; daughter-in-law, Susan Schadewaldt of Baraboo, WI; 9 grandchildren, 4 stepgrandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, 2 stepgreat-great-grandchildren; and sister, Leona Wolf of Monroe, WI. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry, in 1971; grandson, Geoffrey Boyd in 1995; son Lynden in 2007; and 2 sisters, Irene Jordan and Jean Stamm. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the Dakota United Methodist Church in Dakota. Visitation will be Friday from 5 pm until 7 pm at the Dakota United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Dakota Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established in her name for the Dakota United Methodist Church.
