CLINTON — Bertha J. Pothof, age 77, of Clinton, died Saturday, June 28, 2008, at her home. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, July 2nd, at the Pape Funeral Home. The Rev. James Machen will officiate. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 8:00 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Rock Island National Cemetery. Bertha was born in Crystal Lake, IL, on September 21, 1930, the daughter of Elmer Elsworth and Pearl Green Shockey. She married Marvin Pothof in 1945 in Chicago. Marvin died on January 22, 1988. Bertha was a homemaker. She enjoyed reading, puzzle books, crossword puzzles and baseball, especially following the Chicago Cubs. Bertha is survived by her children, John Pothof of Clinton, Mary Campbell of Chicago, Marvin (his wife, Kathryn) of Clinton, Johanna White of Clinton, Elmer (his wife, Lorna) of Clinton, Robert “Tim” Pothof of Clinton, Charles Pothof of Clinton, Henry Pothof of Clinton, Harold Pothof of Clinton and Kathleen Pothof of Breezy Point, MN; 23 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; a sister, Faye Thomas of Superior, WI; and three brothers, Boyd (his wife, Emily) Shockey of Island Lake, IL, Edward (his wife, Linda) Shockey and George (his wife, Ruth) Shockey both of Clinton. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, an infant son, Marvin, a daughter, Martha, three brothers and two sisters. Online condolences may be left at www.papefh.com.
