CLINTON — Axel A. Martinsen, age 90, of Clinton, died Tuesday, June 10, 2008, at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 14th, at the Pape Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Springdale Cemetery. Casketbearers will be family and friends of Axel. Axel was born in Clinton, Iowa, on May 19, 1918, the son of Marcus and Bertha Simmonsen Martinsen. He graduated from Lyons High School in 1936 and attended the Scovill Business College. Axel married Norma Vining on August 28, 1940, in Wapello, Iowa. Axel was employed with E.I. DuPont for over 30 years retiring in 1981. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Fulton County Club and the YWCA. He enjoyed swimming, walking, golfing, gardening and traveling. He was an avid sports fan who enjoyed watching football baseball and golf. Axel is survived by his wife, Norma; a daughter, Cheryl (her husband, Dan) Treakle of Fairbanks, Alaska; two granddaughters, Wendy (her husband, Robert) Souza and Charlotte Treakle both of Fairbanks; a great-granddaughter, Kaylin Souza; and two nieces, LaVonne (her husband, Harold) Bird of Atwood, IL, and Benina Molesbee of Truth or Consequences, NM.
