George Francis Stanley, son of Jim and Rosa Stanley, was born Sept. 20, 1913, at Wagner, Okla. George dutifully and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was among the survivors of the Battle of the Bulge and achieved the rank of staff sergeant.
He married the former Lucille Fine on Jan. 9, 1943, in Junction City, Kan., and they were privileged to enjoy 60 years of happiness together. They just had celebrated with family and friends, their anniversary a week before George’s death. This loving union of George and Lucille was blessed with a daughter, Patricia Ann.
The couple purchased a farm near Siam, Iowa, where they lived and enjoyed farming for 36 years. In 1981, they moved to New Market and became semi-retired. George had enjoyed doing volunteer work at the community building in New Market near his home for many years. He enjoyed the fellowship of family and friends, playing cards and visiting. The couple moved to DeWitt, Iowa, in April 2002 to be closer to their daughter and family. While in DeWitt, George loved the time he could spend with his three great-grandsons and enjoyed his new friends at Grace Towers.
George was baptized Aug. 27, 1953, in the Siam Church of Christ in Siam, Iowa, where he remained a faithful and willing worker in the church. He also was a member of New Market American Legion.
