CAMANCHE — Carl H. Jess, age 86, of Camanche, died Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at the V.A. Medical Center in Iowa City. As per family wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. There will be no visitation or funeral services. Interment will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Camanche at a later date. The Pape Funeral Home is assisting the family. Carl was born on Dec. 2, 1921, in Clinton, IA, the son of Paul and Lucy (Christoferson) Jess. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1942-1945. He married Merline Iliff on May 11, 1946, in Clinton. He worked at E.I. DuPont as a carpenter for 32 years, retiring in 1978. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting, golfing, where shot a hole-in-one and bowling where he bowled a 300 game. Carl is survived by his wife, Merline Jess, of Camanche; a son, Doug (Betty) Jess of Camanche; her daughter, Jane (Lenny) Beal of Camanche; six grandchildren, Nick, Tom, Mat, Dru, Katy and Joe; a brother, Edward (Betty) Jess of Summerville, AL; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, Thomas, two sisters and a brother. Death date: May 14, 2008
