CLINTON — Charles P. “Charlie” Harris, age 70, of Clinton, died Friday, May 16, 2008, at his home. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, May 22nd, at the Pape Funeral Home in Clinton. The Rev. Horst Hehr will officiate. A gathering of family and friends will begin at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday at the funeral home. Inurnment will be at a later date. Charles was born in Atalla, Alabama, on August 14, 1937, the son of Bryon P. and Edna Otha Handy Harris Sr. Charles graduated from Clinton High School and attended Northwestern University while stationed at Great Lakes. Charlie married Lucille Byers on December 17, 1959, in Clinton. He served with the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1965. Charlie served as a bosons mate on the minesweeper, USS Conecun, the air craft carrier USS Tripoli and the aircraft carrier Intrepid. While on board the Intrepid Charlie was involved in the Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba. Charlie had worked in the car shops of the Chicago Northwestern Railroad for 10 years. He worked construction with Labor Local 2288 in Clinton and later with Labor Local 43 in Cedar Rapids. He was the last business agent for the Clinton Local. Charlie was a member and past commander of VFW 2288, a member of the Clinton Bowling Association and a former member of the AMVETS. Charlie was an active volunteer. He spent many hours assisting RSVP and was involved with Toys for Tots, Symphony of Lights, Riverboat Days, Mobile Meals, Clinton Police Association Academy and as a courier for the Quad-City Times. He enjoyed watching his grandkids play sports, was an avid Cubs and Bears fan and enjoyed camping. Charles is survived by his wife Lucille; his five children; Susan Seed of Marshalltown, IA, Joan “Joni” (her husband, Rex) Bolton of Mesa, AZ, Charles M. Harris, Steven J. (his wife, Deanna) Harris and Patrick G. (his wife, Trischa) Harris all of Clinton; ten grandchildren; Eric, Chisum, Brett, Jessica, Elizabeth, Alison, Ryan, Michelle, Regan and Gabriel; a great-grandson, Conner; his dog, “Runt;” three brothers, Patrick N. (his wife, Gloria) Harris of Silvas, IL, Paul M. Harris of Nevada and Bryon P. (his wife, Julie) Harris Jr. of Clinton; a sister Patricia G. Harris of Clinton; and nieces and nephews. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter in infancy and a brother, Robert. Death date: May 16, 2008
