Jeanette was born on December 5, 1917, to John and Helen (Matthiesen) Mommsen. She grew up on a farm near Miles, Iowa with nine brothers and sisters. Upon graduation from Miles High School, Jeanette went to the University of Iowa for one year to get her teaching certification. She fondly remembered and cherished her tenure as a teacher at a country school near Charlotte, Iowa. Jeanette married Raymond Eggers on December 27, 1939 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Preston, Iowa. Together they farmed side-by-side on their farm south of Andover and raised five children. As a charter member of Faith Lutheran Church in Andover, Iowa, Jeanette was very active teaching Sunday school, Bible school and Confirmation classes. She loved Bible studies especially those given in her women’s circle meetings, singing hymns and sewing quilts for others. Besides her dedication to her church and family activities, dancing with her beloved Raymond, reading, gardening, traveling, visiting with her neighbor, Dorothy Ragis, gave her joy and peace. All who visited her home can remember that you could not leave without a loaf of bread, cookies or produce from her garden. Jeanette’s family includes, Janice (Ron) Gray of Miles, Iowa, Phyllis (Ed) Hazlehurst of Wilhoit, Arizona, Eugene (Virginia) Eggers of Clinton, Iowa, Laurie (Steve) Wood of Iowa City, Iowa, and Marcia (Steve) Witt of Elvira, Iowa. Fourteen grandchildren and twenty-two great-grandchildren will lovingly miss her. She is survived by three sisters, Ann Simmons, Velma Petersen and Fern Dosland and one brother, Wayne Mommsen. Three brothers, John Jr., Glen and Waldo; two sisters, Lois McCulloh and Margaret Kunau; a grandson, Michael David Gray; and a great-granddaughter, Hanah Erickson, preceded her in death.
