The Clinton Herald Saturday June 18, 1892 p. 3 The community was startled last evening by the news of the death of Mr. Peter Matzen which occurred at his home, No. 510 Fourth avenue, at 7:45. Mr. Matzen had been afflicted for some time with stomach trouble but he had kept his complaint to himself, so that very few, even his most immediate friends, were aware of his illness. On Thursday he was taken worse and although in considerable pain, did not deem it necessary to call a physician. On Friday he was taken with a congestive chill and medical aid was summoned. The doctors worked over him all day but without avail, his dath taking place as previously stated. Mr. Matzen was born in the province of Schleswig, Germany, on February 21st, 1850, and came to America about twenty years ago, locating in Clinton. He was editor of the Iowa Volks Zeitung, the leading German newspaper of this section, for some years, afterwards embarking in the clothing business with Mr. A.W. Bockel under the firm name of Matzen & Bockel. A few years ago Mr. Matzen disposed of his interest in the store to his partner and had since been engaged in the real estate and insurance business. In the spring of 1890 he was elected Auditor of the city, which office he filled in a creditable and praiseworthy manner for two years. He was a member of Hermann Lodge, K.P., and Hart Division, Uniformed Rand; also Walhalla Lodge I.O.O.F., and the German Turner Association. A wife and four children survive him. Mr. Matzen in his business and official life, proved himself to be a pleasant, accomodating man, and a conscientious and capable city officer, one always ready to help on any public enterprise or assist a friend in trouble. The funeral will be held to-morrow afternoon at 4 o'clock from the late residence on Fourth avenue, services at 2:30 in charge of the Odd Fellows.
