The Clinton Herald Tuesday December 5, 1939 p. 5 Mrs. Mary Welles Coan, 79, died at 7 o'clock this morning in the home of her daughter, Mrs. H.J. Rendall, Morrison, Ill., with whom she had been residing. Mrs. Coan, a former Clinton resident, had been ill some time with a heart ailment. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon in the Rendall home and about 3:30 p.m. in Springdale cemetery, Clinton, where burial will be made. The Rev. C.H. Becker of the Morrison Presbyterian church will officiate. Mary Welles was born in Fulton, Ill., May 27, 1860, the daughter of Edwin and Isabel Griswold Welles. She and William F. Coan was married Dec. 11, 1883, and he preceded her in death in 1918. Mrs. Coan was the first president of the Clinton Y.W.C.A., was a member of the board of Jane Lamb hospital and a member of the Presbyterian church. She attended the Abbott academy as a young woman. Surviving are three children, Mrs. H.J. Rendall and Mrs. Catherine Smith, both of Morrison, and Folwell W. Coan of Minneapolis, and 10 grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Edwin, in 1906.
