DEWITT — Mr. Marion J. Sherer, 78, DeWitt, Iowa, died Tuesday, January 15, 2008, in his home. Marion Joe Sherer was born December 20, 1929, in Worth County, Missouri, to Arthur and Ferne (Weigart) Sherer. On June 8, 1952, he married Betty Morene Conrad in the First United Methodist Church, Maryville, Missouri. He was a graduate of Grant City High School, Missouri, Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville and received a master’s degree in music education from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He had been a music instructor in Craig, Missouri, as well as Ventura, Iowa, and DeWitt, Clinton Community College and Orion, Illinois, retiring in 1994. Marion also held a real estate broker’s license for a number of years. In the early fifties he served two years in the service with the First Armored Division Band, Fort Hood, Texas. Marion had been active in education associations, Noon Lions, the American Legion and the United Methodist Church, serving as adult choir director for thirty years in Clear Lake, Iowa, and DeWitt. Marion was currently a member of the DeWitt Fine Arts Foundation and was a past member of the boards of the Clinton Symphony and New Directions in Clinton. Following retirement, he enjoyed serving in various ways in the church and community and shared his love of music by entertaining at care facilities and travelogues. Marion appreciated travel, reading and just being with others. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Jolene (Daniel) Crowley, Delmar, New York, and Carolee (Thomas) Whitehill, Englewood, Colorado; granddaughters, Janessa and Kelsey Cornell; grandsons, Ryan and Bryce Whitehill; and stepgrandchildren, Michael and Caitlin Crowley; a brother, Garland (Vivian) Sherer, Grant City, Missouri. Preceding Marion in death were his parents and a son-in-law, Mark Cornell. The family will receive friends at the United Methodist Church, DeWitt, from 12:00 noon until 2:45 p.m. Saturday, January 19, 2008. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday in the church with the Rev. Chuck Kelsey presiding. An afternoon luncheon will follow.Private interment will be at a later date.
