Mr. Howes, who was in his eighty-first years, having been born in Peoria, Ill., March 11, 1855, the eldest son of the late Philip and Esther Waters Howes, came to Clinton in 1859. He was educated in Clinton public schools and in 1870 engaged in the jewelry business, continuing in that capacity until 1908, since which time he had been active in the management of the Howes building, Fifth avenue, South, and Second street. He served Clinton as mayor during the 1912-1913 term and was active in many civic undertakings losing no opportunity to further the interests of Clinton and its people. His activity extended also to fraternal and religious circles. He was a thirty-third degree Scottish Rite Mason, a member of DeMolay consistory, and in 1935 received a certificate for fifty years of membership in Emulation lodge, 255, A.F. & A.M. For many years he had been an elder in the First Presbyterian church and for several years was president of the board of trustees of Jane Lamb Memorial hospital. He also was a member of the Clinton Rotary club. In addition to being president of the E.M. Howes company, owner of the Howes building, he was vice president of the Clinton Mutual Plate Glass association. When the new Scottish Rite Masonic temple was constructed here early in the present century, Mrs. Howes was an active member of the committee which made the new building possible. Likewise he was active in connection with the erection of the new First Presbyterian church and gave generously of his time, talents and money to that project. His death yesterday morning brought sorrow to many persons who cherished his friendship and had benefited by his acquaintance. Left to mourn his death are his widow, Mrs. Anna Bedford Howes, formerly of DeWitt, to whom he was married Nov. 6, 1895, a son Laurence Howes of Clinton, grandson, Edward Howes of Clinton, four brothers, Benjamin Howes of Los Angeles, Calif., who was associated with him in the jewelry business, Richard N., George and Philip Howes all of Clinton, and a number of nephews and nieces.
