The Clinton Herlad Thursday June 11, 1953 p. 12 Mrs. L. James Baird, about 37, wife of Comdr. Baird of Norfolk, Va., and a former DeWitt resident, died Wednesday in a Norfolk hospital after a long illness. The body will be brought to the McGinnis funeral home. Burial is planned in Elmwood cemetery, time to be announced. Rev. Lester F. Olson, Congregational minister, will officiate at graveside rites. The former Jeanne Somers was born in 1916 in New York state to Mr. and Mrs. Romero Somers. she moved with her parents to Long Beach, Calif., and was married there June 6, 1937, to J.L. Baird. She had visited DeWitt frequently and at one time resided here. Surviving are the husband; one daughter, Terry; her father and three brothers. Her mother preceded her in death. Comdr. Bair, Terry and his mother, Mrs. Kate Kearney of DeWitt, who had been in Norfolk for several months, are enroute here.

The Clinton Herald Monday June 15, 1953 p. 9 Services for Mrs. L. James Baird of Norfolk, Va., was held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the McGinnis funeral home. Rev. Lester E. Olson of the First Congregational church was in charge. Pallbearers included Herbert L. Smith, Donald Smith, N.T. Baird, Merle Summers, Henry Yegge, all of DeWitt, and Swisher Wilson, Moline, Ill. In charge of the flowers were Mrs. H.M. Coleman, Miss Dorothy Van Meter, Mrs. Henry Yegge, Mrs. Reed Doughty and Mrs. A.F. Deke. Burial was in Elmwood cemetery. Among those from out of town here for the funeral were Commander Baird and daughter, Terry, of Norfolk, Va.; S.R. Somers, Long Beach, Calif.; Mr. and Mrs. Swisher Wilson and family, Moline; Miss Mabel Fenn, Earl Fenn, Mrs. Hannah Turner, Mr. and Mrs. John Turner, Mrs. Grace Bell, Mrs. James Woods, all of Clinton; Mr. and Mrs. O.W. Haring, Camanche; Ralph Haring, Mrs. Laura Haring and daughter, all of Low Moor; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hansen, Moline, and others from nearby towns.
