The Clinton Daily Herald Thursday October 1, 1891 p. 3 At 10:21 last evening at the residence at 238 Sixth avenue, occurred the death of James Smith, of paralysis of the heart. The end came suddenly and unexpectedly from this cause, though the deceased had been a great sufferer for the past four years from a broken hip, having been injured by falling through a tun-away at one of C. Lamb & Sons' mills, and had been compelled to use crutches ever since up to the time of his death. About two weeks ado the same hip was broken a second time by a fall onthe Lady Grace while near Lyons. This last misfortune, seemingly almost unbearable, was yet borne with patient calmness until death smoothed away all pains. James Smith was born July 2nd, 1819, in Madison county, New York, where he resided during his early boyhood. When at the age of 12 or 13 years he moved to Perry, Lake county, Ohio. Here he was married in 1844 to Clara Mellin, by the Rev. Caleb Van Ness. In 1847 he moved to Durande, Illinois, where he was engaged in farming until 1853. At this time he came to Iowa and located at Maquoketa, becoming interested in the sash, door, and blind business. In 1860 he came to Clinton where he had since lived, following the trade of millwright. Besides his wife two children are left, Mrs. A. Lamb of this city, and Mrs. W.G. Bevier of Tipton; also a number of grandchildren. The deceased had three brothers, two of whom live in Durande, Ill., and the other one at Rich Hill, Missouri. Mr. Smith was well known in Clinton where he lived so long; possessing as he did those honorable, sterling, straight-forward qualities which endeared him to family and friends alike. The funeral service will be held at the late residence tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. S.C. Bronson. Burial will take place at Springdale.
