POCATELLO, Idaho — Earl Vogel, 93, Pocatello, died Monday evening, December 31, 2007, at a local health care center. He was born October 24, 1914, in Dubuque, Iowa, to George and Elsie Seemon Vogel. He attended parochial schools in the key city. Earl spent five years working at the Old Dubuque Star Brewery and in 1939, joined the Interstate Power Company at Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin. Earl volunteered for Navy service January 1942, and was aboard the destroyer USS Phillip No. 498 for the duration of World War II. After 23 enemy engagements, and six Bronze Stars in the Pacific Theater, Earl returned from Shanghai, China, September 1945, and was discharged as chief electrician mate.Earl married Dorothy Schwaegler, who was a childhood friend, and later the girl he left behind during the war. After their wedding in Jersey City, New Jersey, they moved back to Iowa and Earl returned to work with Interstate Power in Clinton, Iowa, until his retirement as district technician June 1978. Earl and Dorothy were married for 55 years. He was a member of the American Legion and a charter member of AMVETS Post 28, Clinton, Iowa.Earl and his wife, Dorothy, moved to Pocatello, Idaho, and lived at Ridgewind Assisted living for six years. Dorothy passed away in 2004, and Earl remained there until February of 2007 when he moved to the Idaho State Veterans Home, where he remained until his death on December 31, 2007.Earl is survived by one daughter, Lynn L. (Donald) Young of Pocatello, Idaho; two grandchildren, Amy (Matt) Schwartz and Steven (Shawna) Young; three great-granddaughters. He was preceded in death by one son, Barry, his parents, four brothers and one sister. The family would like to thank the wonderful people at both the Veterans Home and Ridgewind for being so kind and loving. A special thank-you goes out to dear friends Randy and Malinda Gaines, who, in the course of volunteering, have made Earl's time in Pocatello very memorable. Services will be conducted at a later date in Clinton, Iowa. Cremation has been completed under the direction of the Cornelison-Henderson Funeral Home, 431 N. 15th Ave., Pocatello. Death date: Dec. 31, 2007
