The Clinton Herald Tuesday September 5, 1961 p. 8 Ralph W. Beal, 73, retired manager of the Malcolm-Dallyn property and Clinton Public Links golf course, died suddenly Monday evening at his home in the Oakhurst Apts. Generations of Clinton golfers knew Mr. Beal, and many of them learned from him how to play the game. Shortly before he retired as manager of the public links, he noted that grandchildren of some of the men who had been caddies for him were now playing golf themselves. Until his retirement, it was estimated that he had failed to be present and directing the operation of the course no more than 15 days in his almost four decades as manager. Coincidentally, on the day he died, the course was closed permanently. It is the site of a growing housing development. A resident of Clinton for 41 years, he was born Sept. 18, 1887 in Zuma Township, Ill., the son of Samuel and Sarah Wainwright Beal. He was married Feb. 21, 1912 to Blanche Corwell of Chicago. Survivors include his widow, two sons, Edwin S. of Clinton and Milton of Omaha, Neb.; four grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Nettie Wake of rural Port Byron, Ill. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Snell-Smith funeral home with Rev. Russell Wilson, associate pastor of the First Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Springdale cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 7:30 p.m. today.
