Death of a Pioneer
James Saxton, the Well Known Farmer and Veteran, Called Christmas Night
At 10:30 Christmas night occurred the death of one of Clinton county's most honored citizens, James Saxton, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. James O'Boyle, 738 Sixth avenue. Mr. Saxton has resided in this county for forty years, most of the time on his farm near DeWitt. He was a native of Ohio, but came west when he was yet a young man. He entered the army when war broke out and with him enlisted his two eldest sons. He was always known as an honorable man, and the patriotic sentiment which called him and his sons into the army, predominated throughout his life. Mr. Saxton was nearly seventy-five years old.
One son, John, now deceased, was the postmaster and well known business man of DeWitt; Benjamin, in the western part of the state, and George and Stephen here, remain; also five daughters, Mrs. Mary O'Boyle, Mrs. Maria Benedict and Mrs. Ida Corbett, here; Mrs. Abbie Tuttle in the western part of the state, and Misses Maggie and Anna of DeWitt. Two sisters also survive him, Mrs. John Howe, of DeWitt, and Mrs. Wm. Fuller, of Chicago.
The funeral service took place at DeWitt.
