SABULA — Richard “Dick” E. Smith, age 83, of Sabula, Iowa, passed away Thursday, November 15, 2007 at his home in Sabula, Iowa. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 20, 2007 at the Calvary Lutheran Church, Sabula, Iowa with Reverend Robert Krueger officiating. Burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery, Sabula. A Memorial fund has been established in Dick’s name. Friends may call from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m., Monday, November 19, 2007 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Sabula. Online condolences may be given to the family at www.lawjonesfuneralhome.com. Dick was born April 6, 1924, the son of Shirley E. and Laura (Newman) Smith in Central City, Iowa. He grew up in Hopkinton, Iowa, following graduation from Hopkinton High School, he and his parents moved to Cedar Rapids. In 1942, Dick joined the United States Army during World War II, where he became a Radio Mechanic. On June 25, 1946, Dick married Violet Rogers in Kansas City, Kansas. He was in the Army Reserves for twenty-four years, retiring as a Sergeant Major. He worked thirty-three years at the Savanna Army Depot, retiring in April 1980. Dick was a member of the Sabula Volunteer Fire Department, serving as Chief for many years and he started the Sabula Ambulance Service in 1973. Dick held membership in the Sabula American Legion Post #74, and was a past Post Commander. He belonged to the Sabula Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #5234, Voyager Post #583 of the 40/8 of Jackson County, Iowa; a past Sabula, Iowa school board member, the Sabula Fireman’s Association and a confirmed member of the Sabula Calvary Lutheran Church. Dick very much enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed Polka music, playing cards, fishing, hunting, bird watching and feeding the squirrels. Dick was always proud of being a World War II Veteran. Dick will be dearly missed by his wife, Violet; three sons, David (Ruth) Smith of Sabula, Gary (Sue) Smith of Jacksonville, Florida and Brian Smith of Gardner, Kansas; five grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; four great grandchildren; six step-great grandchildren; two step- great great grandchildren. Dick was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Robert and Thomas; an infant granddaughter, Melissa Ann Smith. Death Date: Nov. 15, 2007
