Phelps, Russell L.

CAMANCHE — Russell L. Phelps, 87, of Camanche, died Monday, November 5, 2007 at his home in Camanche. Home going services will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, November 8, 2007, at the Gateway Baptist Church in Clinton with Rev. Jon Booth officiating. Burial will be in the Clinton Lawn Cemetery with military honors being conducted by the Camanche VFW. A lunch at the church will follow the services at the cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Kevin Sturtz, Darin Sturtz, Kevin Wisor, Randy May, Ray Birkett and Bob Birkett. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Camanche Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Home and Crematory.

Russell Laverne Phelps was born on July 16, 1920, in Belle Plaine, Iowa, the son of William and Beulah (Choun) Phelps. He married Evelyn Manley on May 9, 1943, in Vinton, Iowa; she died May 18, 2002; he later married Virginia Jordan on June 14, 2003. He was a 1938 graduate of Belle Plain High School, Belle Plain, Iowa. He also served in the United States Army during World War II from 1942 to 1946. He managed the Froning Grain Elevator for 10 years; and then was employed with Carstensen Freightlines as a mechanic for 20 years, retiring in 1982. He enjoyed working on lawn mowers, snow blowers and weed trimmers. He was a faithful member of the Gateway Baptist Church in Clinton.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia of Camanche; two daughters, Marie (James) Sturtz of Camanche, Iowa, and Laverna O’Neal of Clinton, Iowa; two sons, David (Mary) Phelps of Camanche, Iowa, and Roger (Carolyn) Phelps of Clinton; three stepdaughters, Jeanne (Jerry) Edfors of East Moline, Illinois, Mary (David) Phelps of Camanche, Iowa, and Barb (Paul) Mills of Camanche, Iowa; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; three sisters, Lucille Dolan of Vinton, Iowa, Margaret Heathcote of Marshalltown, Iowa, and Beulah Kune of Marshalltown, Iowa; one brother, Eugene (Phyllis) Phelps of Vinton, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Evelyn; three brothers and four sisters.

The family requests that memorials be made to the Gateway Baptist Church.
