SERVICES: Memorial service for both Stephen and Ilona is at 3 p.m. Oct. 7 at Park View Lutheran Church. The Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Home and Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements.

CLINTON — Stephen Nemeth, 85, died Sunday at the Harmony House, Clinton. Cremation rites have been accorded.

He was born in Tászar, Hungary, on Feb. 15, 1922. He married Ilona Kisfali on Jan. 22, 1949 in Pécs, Hungary. She died in 2005. After the Russian invasion of Hungary in October of 1956, he sneaked his wife and daughter out of Hungary in January of 1957. After spending nine months in three refugee camps in former Yugoslavia, they made their new home in Clinton, being sponsored by First United Presbyterian Church. He was a cobbler in Hungary. He worked with Clinton Corn. He resided at Harmony House since October 2003.

Survivors include one daughter, Julianna (Lowell) Stuedemann of Eldridge; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army or the Gateway Area Chapter of the American Red Cross.
