Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Law-Jones Funeral Home in Hanover.SERVICES: 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.HANOVER, Ill. — Philip Newell Townsend, 91, of Hanover, died Thursday at Grandview Estates Assisted Living in Elizabeth, Ill. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Hanover. Military rites will be accorded by the Hanover VFW. He was born in Shullsburg, Wis., on Jan. 27, 1916, to Frank and Anna McCarty Townsend. He married Ruth Blyth on Dec. 11, 1944, in Elkton, Md. She died in 1971.He graduated from Shullsburg High School in 1933. After working in the Civilian Conservation Corps, he served in the United States Army during World War II. He moved to Hanover in 1946 and worked at the Savanna Army Depot as a production controller specialist for 30 years until retiring in 1976. He played for baseball teams in Hanover in the 1940s. He managed the Hanover Little League during the 1950s and 1960s. Survivors include six sons, Vance (Barbara) Townsend of Fort Collins, Colo., Ward (Julie) Townsend of Tucson, Ariz., Frank (Mary) Townsend of Hanover, Andrew (Cindy) Townsend of Salisbury, Md., Russell (Cindy) Townsend of Freeport, Ill., and Ernest (Jeneen) Townsend of St. Charles, Ill.; one daughter, Amber (Robert) Palm of Tucson; 11 grandchildren; one brother, Bergen (Gert) Townsend of Shullsburg; and one sister, Kathleen Davison of Shullsburg; and one brother-in-law, William Reed of Monroe, Wis.Memorials may be made in his name to Grandview Estates, 540 Pleasant St., Elizabeth, IL 61028 or F.H.N.
