NEWTON — Arthur John “Jim” Greve of Newton died Wednesday at the Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines.

He was born Aug. 30, 1928 in Grand Mound to Arthur J. Greve and Martha Boyert. He married Mary Jo Knight on Jan. 20, 1952, in Clinton.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Following his discharge from the Navy, he attended the Northwestern University Traffic Institute.

He became a police officer in Clinton. The couple resided in Clinton until 1974, when they moved to Newton and he became the chief of police. Following his retirement from police work, he served as an investigator for the Polk County Medical Examiner’s Office and later became the first appointed Jasper County Clerk of Court. He then served two terms on the Newton City Council.

Survivors include his wife; sons, Arthur J. (Pam Hamilton) Greve of Hilton Head, S.C., Thomas (Sarah) Greve of Bluffton, S.C., and Brian Greve of Ginnnell; daughters, Deborah Greve of Newton and Judy (Tom) Rodewald of Newton; seven grandchildren; and a brother, Ernest Greve of South Burwick, Maine.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son and one brother.
