The Clinton Advertiser Monday February 9, 1925 Patrick Holleran, aged 59 years and a lifelong resident of this city was found dead in the city jail early this morning. He had been struck and injured by an automobile driven by Leonard Kair of 410 North Fourth Street, and was taken to the jail after the accident, which occurred at 6:25 o'clock Sunday evening at the corner of Maple avenue and Third street. Last night Mr. Holleran's injuries did not look serious. Apparently they consisted of minor cuts and bruises. He declared he was not seriously hurt, police officers say, and declined to be taken to the hospital. He was taken to the rear cell, where there is a cot, and was made as comfortable as possible. Dr. W.M. Waliker was called, and made an examination of the injured man. No other injuries were found, other than those of a superficial nature. It is said that police officers visited him a couple of times during the night, and noticed nothing unusual in his condition. At 5 o'clock this morning Officer Arnold Holling went into the rear cell and found the man lying dead on the floor. He was lying face downward, near the cot. Coroner C.F. Kellogg, county coroner, was notified, and stated today that an inquest will be held tomorrow. An autopsy was conducted today to determine the couse of death. According to the police report Mr. Kair was driving north on Third street. Mr. Holleran was walking east on Maple avenue. The driver did not see the man on the intersection until the accident had occured. Mr. Kair stopped and put the victim of the accident into his car, hurrying with him to the police station. He was conscious and talke on the way to the station. The report of the accident, signed by Officer Holling andon file today at the police station, stated that the injured man had been under the influence of alcohol. The inquest tomorrow is expected to definitely determine whether death was due to injuries, or to alcohol. Earl Mills, who was the only eye-witness of the accident, said today the Kair car was proceeding at a moderate rate of speed. Just before the accident happened the driver had dimmed his headlights. Mr. Holleran, it is said, was walking across the intersection with his head down, and did not see the car. The deceased was born in Clinton, and would be 60 years of age in April. He lived alone and had no regular occupation. His only relative is a brother, Frank Holleran, who resides on First avenue. A coroner's inquest will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the J.L. Clarke undertaking parlors. It is planned to hold autopsy during the afternoon. Dr. Walliker, who attended the injured man said today that his examination Sunday evening, showed only slight bruises about the head, and cuts on the hand. There was no depression of the skull, the pupils were the same and breathing normal, indicating that there was no concussion.
