The Clinton Herald Saturday April 21, 1962 Jim Jefferies, 21, Dies in Crash Car Hits Tree on Springdale Clinton County's first traffic fatality of the year occurred shortly after 7 p.m. Friday when James Q. Jefferies, 21, of 714 N. 4th St. was killed when his car hit a tree on Springdale Drive near Bluff Blvd. He was alone in the car. The youth, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle M. Jefferies, was home for Easter vacation from the University of Wisconsin where he was a junior. Police said it appeared that Jefferies 1960 convertible was traveling east at high speed when it left the pavement on the north side and traveled about 100 feet before it hit a tree on the Mount St. Clare College campus. Persons living in the area said the noise of the impact led them to believe there had been an explosion. Jefferies' body was thrown from the automobile and was lying some distance away on the grass. The car was literally split in half and parts were thrown in all directions. The motor and transmission were 20 feet from where the automobile was wrapped around the tree. The battery was found 133 feet away, close to Bluff Blvd. Jefferies was pronounced dead by Dr. J.J. Young, county medical examiner, when taken by city ambulance to Jane Lamb Hospital. Death was said to be due to multiple fractures and injuries. Funeral arrangements are being made at the Snell-Smith funeral home. Funeral services for Jefferies will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the Snell-Smith funeral home. Friends may call between 2 and 4 and 7 and 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Clinton Memorial Park. James Q. Jefferies was born Feb. 3, 1941 in Clinton, the son of Lyle M. and Ruth B. Jefferies. He was educated in the Clinton public schools and graduate from Clinton High School in 1959. He was an Eagle Scout and a member of the Clinton Elks club. Survivors include his parents; one brother, Dan; and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Mary J. Bohnson of Clinton.
