The Clinton Advertiser Saturday March 13, 1926 p. 6 The death of Jeremiah J. McDonnell occurred at ten o'clock Thursday night at the family residence 317 South Fifth street, after an illness of two weeks. Mr. McDonnell was in his eighty-sixth year, having been born February 1, 1841, in Kinsale, Ireland, and coming with his parents to Lowell, Mass. at the age of seven. He learned his trade of designer and stone cutter in Peterboro, New Hampshire, and was recognized as a master craftsman. In April 1865,he came to Lyons and entered the monument business later going to Clinton, where he continued actively engaged until his death a period of sixty-one years, being one of the oldest business men in the city. In the early days of Lyons he was active in civic affairs, serving as mayor and being one of the organizers of the first volunteer fire department. During his term as mayor he was instrumental in having planted the maple trees which border the public square. He was a man of remarkable keenness of mind, enjoying the fellowship of his children and grandchildren; never happier than when dispensing hospitality and always interested in all activities of his home and community. Mr. McDonnell's friends were legion, young and old recognizing his sterling, splendid character and delighting in his quaint and interesting philosophy and reminiscences. Since his earliest residence in Lyons he has been a faithful and devout member of St. Irenaeus Catholic church, being one of a group of ardent workers who assisted in the construction of the present edifice. He was married to Deborah Johnston of Lowell, Mass., whose death occurred December 13, 1915. Those left to mourn his passing are his three daughters, Mrs. Frank L. Holleran, Mrs. Bert E. Brandt and Miss Katherine McDonnell of Lyons. Six grandchildren, F.J. Holleran of New York, Paul, Jeanette, Brent and Miriam Holleran and Deborah Brandt, all of Lyons, and a sister, Mrs. Ellen Manning, of Lowell, Mass. The funeral will be held Monday morning at nine o'clock from St. Irenaeus church with burial in Calvary cemetery.
