Lloyd W. Steffens

Visitation: 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Schultz Funeral Home, Grand Mound.

SERVICES: 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with Pastor Casey Danley officiating.

CALAMUS — Lloyd W. Steffens, 73, of Calamus, died Friday at his daughter’s home.

Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Calamus. Calamus American Legion will conduct military rites.

Pallbearers will be Dwain Goettsch, Oscar Shelton, Doug Henning, Gary Eden, Brant McGivern and Jerry Hodgett. Honorary pallbearers will be Dave Block, Jim Hasley, Ron Wilkens, Don Fedder and Don Ryne.

He was born Jan. 21, 1933, in Lowden to Hugo and Emma Gottschalk Steffens.

He graduated from Lowden High School in 1950.

Following graduation, Lloyd was drafted by the Cleveland Indians and played minor league baseball as a pitcher for two seasons until he was drafted by the Army.

He served in the U.S. Army 25th Infantry during the Korean Conflict from 1953-54.

He was a longtime Calamus resident and business owner, having owned Steffens’ Grocery. He was one of the founders and first manager of Wapsi Oaks Country Club. He took over the family business, Steffens’ Tap, which he ran for many years. He went on to work for Mel Foster Co. as a real estate agent until retirement in 1995. In his retirement he worked as a starter at Emeis and RedHawk Golf Courses in Davenport.

He was a member of Magnus M. Petersen American Legion Post 466, Calamus.

Survivors include his children, Scott (Kim) Steffens and Todd (Paula) Steffens of DeWitt, and Julie (Daniel) Kalfas of Calamus; six grandchildren; a sister, Verneil “Tootie” Steines; a sister-in-law, Hilda “Snooks” Steffens of Calamus; and a special friend, Debera Fish of Jewell, Iowa.

Memorials can be made to Genesis Hospice or VA Volunteer Transit.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
