Florence Arlene Melendy

SERVICES: 2 p.m. Saturday at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. The Rev. Thomas Moe, pastor of First United Methodist Church, Savanna, will be officiating.

SAVANNA, Ill. — Florence Arlene Melendy, 88, of Savanna, died Thursday at Mercy Medical Center–Clinton.

Inurnment will be at a later date in Lower York Cemetery, Thomson, Ill. Cremation rites will be accorded.

She was born June 23, 1918, in Mount Carroll, Ill., to Orlo W. and Marian R. Emery Smith. She married Paul “Red” Melendy on June 18, 1936, in Mount Carroll.

She attended Mount Carroll schools, graduating in 1936.

She was a homemaker. She and her husband owned and operated the original Hire’s Root Beer stand in Savanna from 1939 to 1942 before it became the Chicken Coop.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Savanna.

She also was a Girl Scout leader and “girl friday” for Melendy’s Plumbing and Heating.

Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Nena (David) Engaldo of Downers Grove, Ill.; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
