Donna Stelling, 86, formerly of Stone Lake and Keowee Key, died Friday, December 22, 2006 at Brighton Gardens. She was the wife of the late Frank Henry Stelling, III, MD.
Donna was born June 28, 1920, in Clinton, Iowa. She was the daughter of the late Earl and Cora Mayer.
She earned her associates degree from Mount St. Clare College (now Ashford University) in Clinton and taught school in a one room school house. On January 25, 1944, she and Frank were married in Clinton, where he was on the staff of Schick Army Hospital. After Frank completed his orthopaedic residency, they settled in Greenville in 1949, where they raised a family of six children.
Donna was very interested in her children’s activities, especially AAU swimming. She and Frank were involved in the formative years of competitive swimming in Greenville, initially with the Greenville Swim Team in 1961. All six of their children competed in SAIL swimming beginning with the very first year in 1964. Donna was an active member of the PTA at five Greenville County schools.
In addition to her children’s interests, Donna was involved with local civic organizations, especially the Greenville Little Theater and the Greenville County Republican Party.
Donna enjoyed playing bridge with her friends, “Steak Club,” Furman Basketball, and traveling everywhere with Frank. She was a charter member of the Carolinian Dubutante Club. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Greenville and St. John’s Lutheran Church in Walhalla.
Donna is survived by her six children, Frank (Diane) Stelling of Gaithersburg, MD, Richard (Jane) Stelling of Greenville, Tricia (Jonathan) Simons of Pawley’s Island, Don (Nancy) Stelling of Greenwood, Joan Stelling of Birmingham, AL, and John E. (Robin) Stelling of Greenville; twelve grandchildren, Laura, Emily and Elizabeth Stelling of Gaithersburg, MD, Richard (Meredith) Stelling of Griffin, GA, David Stelling of Boone, NC, John Stelling of Greenville, Joan and Daniel Simons of Pawley’s Island, Catherine and Alison Stelling of Greenwood, and Reagan and Mary Carlisle Stelling of Greenville; one sister, Claire (Gerry) Kallenbach of Port Clinton, OH; and a special friend, Phyllis McCombs of Birmingham, AL.
She was predeceased by six brothers and two sisters.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 10:30 am in Woodlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Meyer Center for Special Children, 1132 Rutherford Rd., Greenville, SC 29609.
