Ruby Darlene Taylor was born on November 7th, 1922 in Dallas County, Iowa, the daughter of Zerry J. and Florence (Morse) Hougham. She graduated from Ventura High School at age 16 in 1939 and from La’James College of Beauty Culture, Mason City, Iowa in 1941. She moved to Clinton to take her first job and met George Taylor, who became her husband and best friend for the rest of her life. They were united in marriage on January 16, 1944, in Gladbrook, Iowa.
Darlene was first a wonderful wife and mother, but also a leader in her community through her many years of volunteering and contributing wherever she could. Her first home in Clinton was a room at the YWCA. Thirty years later as President of the YWCA board she engineered an expansion that included renovation of the original home and an addition including a swimming pool.
Darlene served as a key volunteer in the Methodist churches in each community she lived in. She led efforts to knit mittens for the needy, membership drives, served on various boards and committees, always wanting to make a difference.
Darlene was also a PEO sister, a Cub Scout den leader, a Girl Scout Leader, a Toast Master, President of United Way and a member of United Methodist Women. In all of her roles, Darlene always showed compassion for those whose lives were difficult.
As a mother and grandmother Darlene expressed her creativity through sewing and knitting, making beautiful dresses, suits, pajamas, sweaters, coats, mittens and hats that have dressed up her children and grandchildren for many years.
Darlene is survived by her husband of 62 years, George Taylor; daughter Susan Bisbee (George), Santa Rosa, California; son David Taylor (Cheryl), Estes Park, Colorado; daughter Nancy Lindroth (Rick), Madison, Wisconsin; 9 grandchildren, and 3 great-grand children.
