ELWOOD — Richard S. Nims, 78, of Elwood, died Thursday at Jackson County Regional Health Center, Maquoketa.
Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa, with military honors accorded by Timber City American Legion Post 75 and O’Connor-Regenwether VFW Post 3633 and Maquoketa and Andrew AMVETS Post 62.
His body has been cremated.
He was born Feb. 6, 1928, in Maquoketa to S.Q. “Bud” and Louise Ray Nims. He married Jane Williams on Aug. 1, 1949, at Sacred Heart Church, Maquoketa. They lived in Maquoketa, Keosauqua and Elwood.
He graduated from Maquoketa High School in 1946.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Korea as a communication chief.
He worked with Western Auto for more than 20 years. He also worked with Joe Martins Garage, was a carpenter and the assistant greens keeper at the Maquoketa Country Club for 20 years.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Timber City American Legion Post 75 where he served as commander twice and was a member of American Legion 40&8 serving as treasurer for 10 years.
Survivors include his wife; four children, Kathy (Bruce) Zindel of Walcott, David (Jane) Nims of Richmond, Va., Connie (Dennis) Rorah of Delmar and Keith (Tracy) Nims of Davenport; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren,; and two brothers, William (Susan) Nims of Harbor City, Calif., and Donald (Joyce) Nims of Harriman, Utah.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandchild.
